History Society of Zimbabwe Presentations and Outings 2003 to 2018

The History Society of Zimbabwe, and the Rhodesiana Society before it, have provided their members and their guests with a series of talks, film shows and outings of a diverse nature and on varied topics such as  “The Anglo-Zulu War” to  “Some Birds and Birding Characters of the past”. Herewith below is a list of the 125 activities (comprising 146 talks and/or outings) over the sixteen year period from 2003 to 2018. (Unless otherwise stated all the talks took place in Harare).

A list of talks, film shows and outings from the inception of the Society in 1953 up to 2002 is published in an article in Heritage of Zimbabwe  No. 22 of June 2003 (Special Issue to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Society). The article is entitled “Outings and Talks Organised by the History Society of Zimbabwe between 1953 and 2002” by T. F. M. Tanser.

Prominent Geologists involved with coal geology in Zimbabwe

 

Hwange No.1 Colliery. First Underground Shaft

 

A massive underground explosion thought to have been caused by the ignition of coal dust initiated by methane gas caused 426 fatalities in the Hwange No.2 Colliery, Kamandama Shaft on the 6th June 1972. After 4 days the rescue operation was abandoned when it became clear that nobody could have survived the blast and the shafts were sealed.
